Introduction
What would a language be like without idioms? Like black-and-white TV, I suppose, or food without salt. Idioms add color and flavor to language. They make communication easier, too. They often carry complex meanings in a few simple words.
Unfortunately for the language learner, the words in idioms do not usually mean what they seem to mean. In fact, we could say that an idiom is an expression that you can understand only if someone explains it to you. Knowing the definition of each word in an idiom is not enough to unlock the meaning.
The more idioms you are familiar with, the more the world of English will open up to you. This book of stories introduces hundreds of common idioms. Each story contains idioms of a certain type. For example, “The Old-timer” contains idioms that gave something to do with time. Other stories contain animal idioms, money idioms and so on.
I hope that reading idioms within a story will help you to understand and remember them. I hope, too, that you will discover something else about idioms: They can be a lot of fun.
