A parasite that infects honeybees turning them into zombies is continuing its spread across the US. Beekeepers in Kent, Washington State have recently identified cases of infection by Apocephalus borealis, or scuttle fly, first reported in California in 2008. The fly injects its eggs into honey bees. The eggs then hatch inside the bee, causing erratic behavior and eventual death. This animation explains the life cycle of the scuttle fly and how it affects infected bees.
