Insect wings are 10 times thinner than a human hair, yet they can withstand millions of cycles of rapid flapping in unfavorable conditions. Scientist Jan-Henning Dirks studied the S. gregaria, a long-distance flying desert locust, to discover the secret to insect wing strength. Dirks found that the membrane of the locusts’ wings is not as durable as was expected. Cross veins make the wings 50 percent more durable.
