Geothermal energy taps reservoirs of steam or hot water beneath the earth’s surface heated by magma, friction or radioactive heat sources. Cold water is pumped into the reservoir, where it is heated. Pressure pushes heated water up to the surface. This hot water heats a secondary fluid via a heat exchanger. Steam from the secondary fluid spins a turbine to generate electricity. Sources: Economist
